In 1 Corinthians 8, Paul talks to the Corinthian church about buying and eating food that has been sacrificed to idols. He says that, though the church has knowledge that eating sacrificed meat does not make them closer or further from God, eating it may cause a new believer to stumble. In this case, it is better to lay down your rights for the sake of the new believer than to exercise your right and cause a brother or sister to sin. Idolatry looks different today than it did in Paul's day, but the principle remains true.
