The scripture today was 1 Corinthians 5:1-8. Paul addresses a case of sexual immorality in the church. If there is no repentance, and the sin is ongoing, then we are called, in love, to hand the man over to his sin "so that his spirit may be saved." We see in the parable of the prodigal son that the father does not run out to rescue the son who has chosen to live a sinful lifestyle. Rather he hands the son over to his sinful desires. However, when his son seeks true repentance and comes to make it right with his father, the father welcomes him back with open arms. We are not called to tolerate/accept/celebrate sin, because this is enabling and is ultimately unloving. We are called to give grace first, as we all fall short of the glory of God. However, for repeating, unrepentant sin, the church should not be tolerant. For, "a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough."
There are 5 key takeaways:
We acknowledge sin.
We DO NOT celebrate sin.
We DO NOT let sin corrupt the church.
We address sin with sincerity and truth with a goal of redemption for the sinner.
